Market FAQs

What is the Crested Butte Farmers Market?

The Crested Butte Farmers Market is an organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of sustainable, local agriculture.  Projects include hosting an open-air farmers market during the summer and early autumn, educational film screenings, kids activities, educational workshops and seminars.

What can be sold at the Crested Butte Farmers Market?

Customers can find an assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, herbs, cheeses, arts and crafts at the market. Everything sold at the market – with the exception of those items pre-approved by the board of directors – must be grown, raised or made in Colorado.  Beginning in 2009, all fresh produce and animal products must be sustainably or organically grown.  New applicants for 2009 who wish to sell produce must be USDA-certified Organic or Certified Naturally Grown.

When and where does the market run?

The Crested Butte Farmers Market is located on the 100-block of Elk Avenue, but may temporarily change locations as directed by the Town of Crested Butte.  2009′s market will run every Sunday from June 21st through October 4th.  The operational hours of the market are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Do Crested Farmers Market Growers use organic methods?

Some of our growers are USDA-certified Organic.  Others are Certified Naturally Grown.  Beginning in 2009, all growers are required to adhere to sustainable, naturally growing practices with new vendors required to be either certified organic or certified naturally grown.  Customers are encouraged to get to know the farmers.  Asking insightful questions is the best way to educate yourself about the grower, product and the issues facing sustainable agriculture in Colorado.

How do I sell at the Crested Butte Farmers Market?

All vendors are required to fill out an application to sell at the farmers market.  We begin the application process at the end of January and 2009 applications will come available on Friday, January 30th.  Established vendors in good standing  are given priority during the application process.  The priority deadline for established vendors in good standing is March 21, 2009.  The final deadline is Wednesday, April 15th.  For more information or to download an application visit our vendors information page.

What’s the deal with the Free Tent?

The free tent provides an opportunity to share with your fellow community members.  Everyone has some things lurking in their closet for which they no longer have use, yet that still have value.  By bringing clothing, appliances, books, DVDs and other items that you no longer use to the free tent, you’re given the opportunity to share them with someone else.  In 2008, several items were given away including a big screen TV, a mountain bike, two snowboards, a computer, hundreds of books and several other items.

Can I volunteer?

Volunteers are always needed and we have exciting opportunities for volunteers.  Those people interested in volunteering at the market may participate at the market information tent, the zero-waste station or by assisting in set-up and breakdown.  Volunteers are also needed for the Crested Butte Farmers Market dining co-operative scheduled to begin this spring. Volunteers, from time to time, may enjoy special benefits including free, local produce from the market or discounted rates from the dining co-operative.

How can I support the market?

Currently, the Crested Butte Farmers Market receives no federal, state or local funding.  While our vendors pay fees to participate at the market, it is critical that the Crested Butte community support the market as well.  Sponsorship opportunities are available for corporations and similar opportunities are available for community members.  Donations that assist the Crested Butte Farmers Market in proceeding with its many projects are always welcome.  Further, you can always buy some market gear or participate in one of our scheduled fundraisers.
